I Did Not Invent You

I’ve forgotten those fingers
their tips, their warmth;
so briefly did the hands join.
The shapes of that whisperI cannot now recall
– our lips grew apart in the crowd of voices.
Nor do I remember your eyes
last seen when a fire blazed between us.
And so that’s why I write.
To remind myself that you were there
that I did not invent you.
